How City Leaders Can Reduce Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes can be a major buzzkill. One moment you’re enjoying a night in your yard, at the park, or watching a baseball game, and the next you’re swatting and spraying to no avail. The mosquitoes have come to ruin your good time and they came in force. Protecting yourself and your yard is one matter, but it can take group effort to effectively control the mosquito population in your community. Here’s what city leaders can do to help reduce mosquitoes.
Mosquito population surveillance
The first step to controlling the mosquito problem in your town is to know how many mosquitoes are in your area. Mosquito population surveillance is a way to quantify the number and type of mosquitoes to best assess how, where, and when to act. There are a variety of ways to capture mosquitoes to estimate their current population numbers and is often carried out by university scholars or other mosquito-focused professionals.
Apart from mosquito population studies, there are other ways to know you have a mosquito problem in your city. If spending time outdoors in local parks, playgrounds, or other recreational areas becomes unpleasant around dusk, it’s likely time to act.
Neighborhood cleanup day
One of the easiest ways to eliminate a budding mosquito problem is to prevent more mosquitoes and this means rid of their favorite breeding grounds. A community-wide cleanup day is a great way to encourage residents to remove stagnant sources of standing water like small pools, birdbaths, and buckets. It’s a good idea to also encourage general trash collection as things like old tires, sagging tarps, and other assorted “junk” can be unexpected sources of ideal mosquito mating grounds.
Genetically modified mosquitoes
Some city leaders have chosen more drastic measures to reduce the number of mosquitoes in their communities with the introduction of Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) mosquitoes. Mosquitoes can be rendered infirtile through a variety of methods including radiation and an introduction of naturally-occuring bacteria. These techniques are still being studied for large-scale population control efforts, and while results seem to be positive, this may not be a viable or appropriate action for most cities.
Mosquito eradication treatments
For a truly mosquito-free al fresco experience, mosquito treatment sprays are a community favorite. Subdivisions, parks departments, municipalities, and individual homeowners can elect for mosquito treatment sprays to eliminate mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, and spiders. The more residents that elect for treatments, the more effective the preventative shield will be and the more cost-effective individual treatments become.
