Preventing mosquitoes in your yard is the best way to enjoy the outdoors. Here are four things to keep in mind when it comes to enjoying the outdoors mosquito-free.

Stay Dry

Mosquitoes thrive in wet conditions so it’s essential to eliminate all sources still water in your yard. The quick mosquito lifecycle means that decorative pieces like birdbaths or sculptures can become mosquito breeding grounds in just days. If your yard often collects water due to the natural slope, it may be a good idea to consider adjusting the grade of your yard to improve drainage. The drier you can keep your yard, the less likely you are to have a large mosquito population.

If you do choose to have natural water features like a pond, it’s important to ensure you have adequate water movement and aeration to prevent mosquito eggs from maturing. Decorative ponds can also be treated with bromine or chlorine to create an inhospitable landscape for mosquitoes, but it’s important that the treatment is sufficiently strong.

Straighten Up the Yard

While large water features aren’t too common, mosquitos thrive in damp conditions of other types. Long grass and weeds can make a perfect hideout for a nasty mosquito infestation. Mosquitoes can also be found hiding under the shade of dense and moisture-loving trees and shrubs like cedars and pines. Keeping your yard in neat and tidy condition can help to prevent mosquitoes from taking over your yard.

Spray Treatments

Enlisting the help of the professionals at Mosquito One is another way to ensure your yard stays mosquito-free. Our mosquito treatments are guaranteed to be effective and each treatment lasts approximately four weeks. Mosquito One professionals are able to treat most yards in just a matter of minutes allowing you and your family to get back to enjoying your outdoor spaces with little downtime.

Share the Knowledge

Your neighbors’ mosquitoes are likely to become your mosquitoes which is why mosquito elimination programs are most effective when neighbors join together. Homeowners associations and municipalities can encourage residents to keep their yards from becoming mosquito breeding havens with hosted cleanup days and programs. Another way to encourage joint mosquito prevention efforts is to combine with others in your area to take advantage of the coverage and discounts offered by the Mosquito One subdivision discount program.

Schedule Your Treatment

There’s still time to enjoy the benefits of mosquito control sprays from Mosquito One. We’re proudly serving the homes, businesses, and public areas in Southeast Michigan including the cities of Detroit, Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Pontiac, and more. Schedule your treatment online today!

When it comes to controlling the mosquito population on your property, Michigan homeowners have tried it all. From tiki torches to bug zappers, swatting to spraying, here are the best and worst mosquito control methods ranked for your Michigan home, business, or property.

Swatting 3/10

Swinging and swatting at mosquitoes won’t get you too far in Michigan. While it might give you an arm workout like Tiger’s pitcher, Spencer Turnbull, simply relying on reflexes and hope is not an effective solution. This method does have the benefit of being quick, easy, and rather effective at preventing the largest bites, but definitely not the best solution.

  • Pros: Convenient, eco-friendly, always available
  • Cons: Energy consuming, violent, needs constant motion

Mosquito Repellent Spray 7/10

One of the most familiar harbingers of a Michigan summer is the smell of bug spray wafting in the breeze. From little league games to campgrounds to your own backyard, mosquito repellent spray is available in a variety of strengths and chemical compositions to be effective no matter how strong (or hungry) the mosquito population is. The most common chemical used in mosquito repellant spray is DEET(N, N-diethyl-3-meta-toluamide), which is available up to 100% strength, however, studies have shown no real added benefit in using a DEET spray with more than 50% strength. In fact, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that a solution of 23.8% DEET provides about 5 hours of protection from mosquitoes.

  • Pros: Effective, fast, inexpensive
  • Cons: Smelly, needs regular reapplication, can stain clothing

Bug Zappers 2/10

Traditional bug zappers use UV light to attract bugs to their lighted and electrified core. The problem is that this attracts all bugs, not just mosquitoes. According to Leslie Vosshal, a neurobiology professor at the Rockefeller University, “Bug zappers are good for attracting insects that are attracted to bug zappers.” Unfortunately, this often doesn’t include mosquitoes or other biting, nuisance bugs. A study done by the University of Delaware tracked six residential bug zappers over a 10-week period and found that of the nearly 14,000 insects killed, only 0.22% or just 31 insects, were biting flies or mosquitoes. Another study by Notre Dame researchers also found dismal results in which mosquitoes made up less than 7% of insects eliminated over an entire season with a bug zapper. In fact, as the Colorado State Extension put it, “No controlled scientific study has shown that these devices reduce mosquito biting rates outdoors.

  • Pros: Non-chemical, one-time cost
  • Cons: Kills everything, not very effective for mosquitoes

Tiki Torches 5/10

Tiki torches are a great way to create a festive, party atmosphere in your yard or outdoor space and do offer some protection against mosquitoes. You’ll need to invest in oil that contains citronella or another mosquito-repelling oil to get the protection, but keep in mind, you may need a LOT of torches to offer full protection as these don’t actually eliminate mosquitoes, but rather simply repel them.

  • Pros: Moderately effective at close range, create ambiance
  • Cons: Not helpful at a distance, need refills often, open fire could be a hazard

Mosquito One Treatment Sprays 9/10

The best way to ensure your property and your family remain protected from the annoyances of mosquitoes is to contact Mosquito One. Our professional mosquito eradication treatments offer protection from mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas and come with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Treatments do need to be reapplied every four weeks or so to ensure proper coverage, however, you’ll benefit by being able to enjoy your outdoors whenever you want without needing to take another mosquito prevention step.

  • Pros: No smell or residue, once a month treatment, incredibly effective
  • Cons: More expensive than other options

Fleas are tiny, and unfortunately common, pests in Southeast Michigan. Often mistaken for bedbugs, these tiny reddish-brown bugs are known for their jumpy movements and insatiable love of blood, especially from pets. These are five common issues fleas can cause to your cat or dog.

Hot Spots

Flea saliva contains enzymes that often cause an allergic reaction making the bite extremely itchy. So itchy, that dogs and cats often scratch or lick the area so much it can develop sores which can become infected. Pets who are showing signs of having hot spots should be taken to the vet for treatment which can include a cone to stop them from licking, a pet-safe antiseptic to clean the wounds, and an antibiotic, if needed.

Anemia

If a flea infestation is severe enough, cats and dogs can become anemic and require treatment. Telltale signs of anemia include lethargy and lighter-than-normal colored gums. A veterinarian can perform a test to detect anemia, and in extreme cases may recommend a blood transfusion, although milder cases require less intense solutions.

Tapeworms

Tapeworms are another flea-borne concern for your pet, but a tapeworm infection is not the result of a bite. Instead, tapeworms are spread when an animal eats a flea that is infected with a tapeworm. Cats and dogs may ingest an infected flea when they are bitten and trying to remove the bug or when they are grooming themselves. Once the flea has been consumed, the tapeworm is able to take up residence in your pet’s body causing them to lose weight and scoot across the ground. Tapeworms can be confirmed by your vet and treated with medication.

Hair Loss

Hair loss in pets can be a sign of an ongoing case of fleas. Animals will itch and scratch to get relief from flea bites, often removing fur, with more severe infestations leading to more hair loss. Once the animal is treated for fleas, the hair should grow back, however, if hair loss is ongoing, you may want to consult your vet to rule out other possible issues like mange.

If you’re concerned about fleas affecting the health of your pet, there are things you can do. Your vet can prescribe flea prevention medication to help keep your pets from flea bites and their potential complications, but for an added layer of protection, call the professionals at Mosquito One. Our human and pet-friendly mosquito barrier treatment is effective at preventing fleas giving everyone in the family the protection they need.

We may joke that winter lasts longer than any other season in Michigan, but from Copper Harbor to Ann Arbor, it is still definitely summer in the Wolverine State. Along with all the beauty and fun that summer weather brings to Southeast Michigan, it also brings mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and other pests in your yard. It’s not too late to enjoy the last of your Michigan outdoor spaces. Here’s why you need to call Mosquito One now!

1. There are still months of mosquito season left

While the summer months are peak mosquito season here in Michigan, like our residents, our mosquitoes are a hardy bunch. Mosquitoes require consecutive days above 50℉ to function and reproduce and in Southeast Michigan, that means mosquito season can run into late October.

2. Yes, mosquitoes really ARE that bad this year

If you’ve noticed an abundance of mosquitoes this year, you’re not alone. Entomologists from Michigan State University have called the recent mosquito influx “biblical” and said swarms are “copious” after the heavy rainfall our area experienced in June and drought-like conditions earlier this year. According to the experts, the mosquitoes we’re seeing now are “floodwater mosquitoes” which thrive on the excessive rain and extreme heat we saw in late June and over the 4th of July. That weather set up the perfect storm for mosquitoes to prosper and wreak havoc over your late summer outdoor plans.

3. Outdoor sports are coming

In addition to the regular time your family spends outdoors, for many families, late summer and early fall is the time they use their yard the most. From afterschool soccer matches to tossing the football around the yard before the Lions game, the comfortable weather and long hours of daylight often mean that people are spending even more time in their yard while mosquitoes are out in force.

4. Protection without hassle

If you’ve never had your yard treated for mosquitoes, you may think it’s simply a luxury or a service for wealthy homeowners. The truth, however, is that mosquito control can have an impressive impact on the enjoyment of your home and yard no matter the neighborhood you live in or what kind of home you have. In many ways, mosquito control is like central air conditioning. Sure, you can live without it, but once you realize how efficient and affordable it can be, it can increase your comfort and ability to enjoy your property enough to more than justify the expense.

Rather than continuing to suffer from bug bites or deal with the hassle of mosquito sprays, make it easy on yourself and your family with a yard treatment from Mosquito One. Our professionals help you create the perfect pest-free yard you’ve been dreaming of. Contact Mosquito One today or schedule your mosquito treatment spray online.

If you’ve taken a walk at dusk, tried to weed in the garden, or just generally been outside this summer, you may have noticed an unpleasant change. The mosquito population in Southeast Michigan has seemingly exploded. Unfortunately, due to a perfect storm of hot weather and plenty of rain, it looks like we’re in for one of the worst mosquito seasons in years.

Edward Walker, an entomology professor at Michigan State University and self-proclaimed “mosquito guy” has noticed this influx and says we should get used to it. Professor Walker studies mosquitoes and vector-borne diseases like those transmitted by mosquitoes and said these pesky bugs are likely to be swarming in the millions across Michigan throughout the rest of the summer.

The mosquitoes we’re seeing in Michigan right now are a species known as summer floodwater mosquitoes. According to Walker, the females lay eggs in low-lying, grassy areas along roadways, ditches, and other potentially swampy areas throughout their entire 3-week lifespan. This means a female can lay hundreds of eggs, possibly up to six different times, before they die. Then, when the rain comes and these grassy areas fill with water, the eggs hatch, and mosquitoes emerge as adults within about 10 days.

The catch here, and the reason we’re seeing so many mosquitoes now, is that the eggs can survive even if the rains don’t come for months or even years. Earlier this year, Michigan experienced drought-like conditions, so when the female mosquitoes laid their eggs, not all of them hatched. Some just sat dormant waiting for the rain. And waiting. And waiting. And during that time, more mosquito eggs were laid in these same areas. When the rain finally came in force during late June, these areas were flooded and all these mosquitoes were able to hatch. This not only created a huge influx of mosquitoes at that moment but also paved the way for a mosquito tsunami throughout the rest of the summer because the new mosquitoes are now able to lay their own eggs and continue the cycle.

According to Walker, “I  can’t put my finger on the exact number of mosquitoes we have right now – that would just be an enormous number, but we went from virtually no mosquitoes – at least of this kind, the pest kind – to a huge population in a very short period of time.”

Unless we see another extreme rainfall shortage, property owners in Michigan can expect to see this huge mosquito population sustain itself through the rest of the summer. While this species of mosquito is not known to carry some of the more common mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile or EEE, they make outdoor activities unenjoyable.

If you’re interested in protecting your property from mosquitoes during this historic mosquito season, call Mosquito One. We proudly serve the communities in Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties in Michigan, as well as Lucas and Wood Counties in Ohio. Ready to act now to protect your home, business, or other areas? Schedule your mosquito treatment spray online and enjoy your yard mosquito-free.
