Sitting in the sun is lovely, but scorching in it is not. Getting the most out of your Michigan backyard oasis requires creating a space with the right balance of sun and shade for you. There are a variety of options and different considerations for what is the best way to create shade in your backyard.

Sun Umbrella

Pros: Inexpensive, moveable, variety of options
Cons: Needs storage or replacing, small space, not good for windy conditions

Table-mounted or freestanding sun umbrellas are a popular choice for creating just enough shade for a small group. Whether you’re looking to seek shelter from the sun while relaxing in a lounge chair or want to keep your snacks from melting on the table, umbrellas make an excellent choice for shade. Outdoor umbrellas come in a variety of different styles including options that have moveable arms or built-in solar led lights. Keep in mind that these options, while designed for outdoor use, will need to be properly stored when not in use to extend their life or will likely need to be replaced every few years.

Pop-up Canopy

Pros: Movable, full sun coverage, inexpensive
Cons: Need to weight down, tripping hazard, storage

Pop-up canopies are a great way to create a larger, but still temporary, shaded space. They are easily moved from one place to another and can set up or take down in minutes. The convenience of portability comes with the downside of needing to weigh or tie down the canopy frame and avoid stumbling into or over the canopy legs.

Pergola

Pros: Adds aesthetic appeal, durable, semi or full shade options
Cons: Upfront expense, maintenance, effort to transition to full shade

A pergola is a structure, typically made of wood, added to the exterior of a building and characterized by its roof of slatted beams. This design offers some protection from the sun while still allowing a lot of light to come through which could be a positive or negative depending on your intended goal. A material cover can be added to the frame of the pergola to provide full coverage from the sun.

Gazebo

Pros: Fully covered, option to fully enclose, durable
Cons: Upfront expense, maintenance, effort to fully enclose

Building or installing a premade gazebo is a luxurious way to create more shade in your yard. Many people choose gazebos that have mesh walls to allow the breeze to enter, but keeps mosquitoes and other bugs out. Solid panels can also be used to create more privacy, turning the gazebo into a secluded space.

Finding the right shade solution for your backyard can help you to create the outdoor paradise you’ve dreamed about. Mosquito One is committed to helping you enjoy that peace mosquito-free. Schedule your Mosquito One mosquito treatment spray online and enjoy a yard free from mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and other pests.

Disney World, the “most magical place on Earth”, takes a lot of precautions to preserve the magic and mystique. From careful staff routes that ensure everyone gets to see their favorite character to the magical way that those characters can reappear across the park in no time, Disney World is a true feat of entertaining excellence. The engineers at Disney have found a way to sustain this magic, even in the bug-filled Florida climate. Here’s why it seem like there are no mosquitoes at Disney World.

From a location standpoint, Disney World should be a mess. Built over 25,000 acres of prime Florida swampland, Disney World should be home to hundreds of thousands of mosquitoes, but yet guests often never come into contact with one. The park has found a way to ensure guests can enjoy the entertainment and high-priced eats without being disturbed by these pesky bugs. This both helps to improve the guest experience, but also helps Disney World to protect park visitors from Zika, West Nile, and other less common mosquito-borne illnesses.

Disney World takes a proactive approach to mosquito treatments using mosquito surveillance programs across its parks. One of the primary tools used by this department is carbon dioxide traps which emit carbon dioxide, the same gas that humans exhale, to attract and then trap mosquitoes. This allows scientists at Disney to understand the number and species of mosquitoes in the area to determine the best way to reduce or eliminate them, often through mosquito treatment sprays.

Another way Disney World monitors the mosquito population is with chickens. Live chickens are kept across the part as a sort of mosquito-borne illness sentinel. The chickens can get these diseases but aren’t harmed by them, which allows scientists to detect the disease, identify where the mosquitoes that passed it are located, and eradicate them.

When it comes to actually killing the mosquitoes that are in the park, Disney World employs a similar strategy of mosquito control as many homeowners in southeast Michigan: mosquito treatment sprays. These barrier treatments allow for hyper-effective mosquito control with only a single application that lasts for weeks, isn’t washed away by rain, and is pet and people-friendly.

Ready to employ the same mosquito prevention techniques as the pros? Call Mosquito One for a professional quality mosquito treatment spray. Our experts have served the communities of Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties in Michigan and can help you enjoy a mosquito-free summer. It’s graduation season and in Michigan, this means a lot of graduation celebrations. Summer is the perfect time to take advantage of the beautiful weather and host an outdoor graduation party, outdoor celebrations take some additional planning. Consider these details when planning your outdoor graduation party.

Parking

If your event isn’t being held at a location with a designated parking lot, it’s important to give your guests instructions for parking. Whether you’re electing for street parking, a nearby parking structure, or even a designated place in the yard, considering this detail will help your guests have a more enjoyable experience.

Weather

Michigan weather can change in an instant. If you’re planning an outdoor party, it’s a smart idea to have a plan in case of bad weather. One of the most popular options is an event tent. Outdoor tents can provide shade, protect against wind and rain, and come in a variety of sizes from 10 to 100+ feet.

Food Safety

Summer parties are ideal for the weather, but potato salad and direct sunlight do not mix. Professional caterers should have this detail covered for you, but if you’re planning a fully DIY party, it’s important to think about the limitations of your party venue when choosing your menu.

Electricity

Avoid a panic on the day of your event by considering the electricity needed for your outdoor event. If you’re having a buffet with electric warmers or roasters, it’s important to ensure your equipment won’t overload the circuit. If you have a variety of appliances you need to run — music, cooking, etc — powerstrips may offer the power you need if outlets are limited.

Signage

Depending on the size and location of your event, it may be necessary to have signage directing your guests to the party. Balloons are a party classic, but signs, streamers, or other identifiable signs are a helpful way to let guests who are not familiar with the event space know they’re in the right spot.

Sanitation

One of the biggest differences between indoor and outdoor events is the availability of cleaning materials. If your event is structured for guests to rotate between tables and standing, having designated table bussers is a smart idea. If you’re hosting a more laid-back event without staff, make sure to have plenty of garbage bins and sanitizing wipes on hand for your guests’ convenience.

Bugs

Don’t let mosquitoes, ticks, or other bugs ruin your outdoor event. The experts at Mosquito One are trained in mosquito treatment applications that eliminate mosquitoes allowing you to concentrate on your guests. Schedule a mosquito treatment spray for a few days before your event and enjoy a worry-free outdoor celebration!

Natural predators consume hundreds to thousands of mosquitoes in an area in a single night. If you’ve got a mosquito population problem on your property, it may be worth considering adding more of these animals to your ecosystem.

Birds

Attracting birds to your yard not only provides entertainment but also helps to control the population of insects, including mosquitoes, on your property. Barn swallows, hummingbirds, orioles, sparrows, and warblers are just some of the bird species that enjoy snacking on mosquitoes. Try to attract these helpful birds to your property by feeding them their favorite foods regularly and they may help you lessen the number of mosquitoes this year.

Fish

If you have a pond on your property, it is important that you keep the water moving. Stagnant water is the number one breeding ground for mosquitoes, but larvae won’t survive in moving water. In addition to circulating your water, keeping fish like goldfish, guppies, bass, and bluegill stocked in your pond will help to eliminate mosquitoes.

Turtles

Turtles are also known to snack on mosquitoes. Instead of relocating turtles away from your property, it may be a smart idea to allow them to enjoy the natural environment while they return the favor by reducing the number of mosquitoes.

Frogs and Tadpoles

Both frogs and tadpoles eat mosquitoes. One frog can lay up to 4,000 eggs at one time. Adult frogs will remain nearby the tadpoles as they grow, making them an ideal protector from mosquitoes. Frog are also great at preventing mosquito populations from getting out of control in the first place. Frogs young and old enjoy not only eating live mosquitoes, but they also snack on the larvae that are found in still water.

Dragonfiles

Dragonflies are often found in wet, swampy areas. These are mosquito breeding grounds which makes it no surprise that mosquitoes are a favorite snack of the dragonfly. To attract more dragonflies to your pond, wetlands, or other water feature, try growing tall grass. Dragonflies like to find places to perch and by creating a comfortable environment for dragonflies, you could reduce the number of mosquitoes.

Natural predators have been used as a way to reduce mosquito populations for years. Instead of relying on animals to eat mosquitoes, there’s an easier way to reduce the mosquitoes, ticks, and other pests in your yard. Contact Mosquito One to schedule your mosquito treatment spray and be one step closer to a mosquito-free summer.

“…very respectful and thorough”

We have a great yard with a pool that we can now enjoy because of Mosquito One.  In the past we had to use bug spray and still got swarmed with Mosquitoes . Now we sit outside after dark and rarely see a Mosquito. With all the new found diseases they carry I am even happier. Their office staff is super friendly and I find their field staff to be very respectful and thorough.  I highly recommend them if you want your yard back from the bugs.

Thanks for the great work,

“… I can enjoy my yard…”

I’ve had several companies service my property to apply mosquito barrier applications with no luck of ridding the problem. Mosquito One has helped not only remove pests from my property, but make it so that I can enjoy my yard with my kids and pets anytime, day or night. I started working for Mosquito One after seeing the results they provided on my property, and now Mosquito One services my grandparents yard as well. We find without our applications we can’t go outside at all. Thanks to Mosquito One, I can enjoy my yard, and gardening all summer long. We can swim in our pool, and play outside with my children, and dogs, and actually enjoy every minute! Thanks!!

Stephanie P.

★★★★★

“It’s amazing.”

So happy with this service. I have very few bugs in my yard now. It’s amazing. I watch those little annoying bugs swarm around in the neighbor’s yard, but I can sit in my yard without bugs bothering me.

They are very responsive to questions and issues, offering to re-spray if any bugs remain after application.

Jennifer W.

My property backs up to wooded acreage. The mosquito control that Mosquito One provides has made a HUGE difference and allows me to enjoy my backyard through the summer months. I’ve recommended this company to family as well and we are all very satisfied with the service!

“Excellent customer service”

Excellent customer service, I love they email me the day before with an approximate time of arrival. Consistent schedule too, I have a season long program and their visits are evenly spaced. We have a lot of trees in our yard and it would not be usable without Mosquito One. Highly recommend.

“…amazing company”

I have used mosquito over 5 years and then they are an amazing company. I have to admit I was suspicious in the very beginning but now I’m a believer and I’m very happy when they come out and spray. We have a pain so we had a lot of mosquitoes and now we have barely any. I can finally go out on my deck in the summer time without getting eaten alive. I highly recommend mosquito one.

Mosquito free 24/7, even at dusk.  A game changer to be able to enjoy our property all season long.  So worth it!

How City Leaders Can Reduce Mosquitoes

How City Leaders Can Reduce Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes can be a major buzzkill. One moment you’re enjoying a night in your yard, at the park, or watching a baseball game, and the next you’re swatting and spraying to no avail. The mosquitoes have come to ruin your good time and they came in force. Protecting yourself and your yard is one matter, but it can take group effort to effectively control the mosquito population in your community. Here’s what city leaders can do to help reduce mosquitoes.

Mosquito population surveillance

The first step to controlling the mosquito problem in your town is to know how many mosquitoes are in your area. Mosquito population surveillance is a way to quantify the number and type of mosquitoes to best assess how, where, and when to act. There are a variety of ways to capture mosquitoes to estimate their current population numbers and is often carried out by university scholars or other mosquito-focused professionals.

Apart from mosquito population studies, there are other ways to know you have a mosquito problem in your city. If spending time outdoors in local parks, playgrounds, or other recreational areas becomes unpleasant around dusk, it’s likely time to act.

Neighborhood cleanup day

One of the easiest ways to eliminate a budding mosquito problem is to prevent more mosquitoes and this means rid of their favorite breeding grounds. A community-wide cleanup day is a great way to encourage residents to remove stagnant sources of standing water like small pools, birdbaths, and buckets. It’s a good idea to also encourage general trash collection as things like old tires, sagging tarps, and other assorted “junk” can be unexpected sources of ideal mosquito mating grounds.

Genetically modified mosquitoes

Some city leaders have chosen more drastic measures to reduce the number of mosquitoes in their communities with the introduction of Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) mosquitoes. Mosquitoes can be rendered infirtile through a variety of methods including radiation and an introduction of naturally-occuring bacteria. These techniques are still being studied for large-scale population control efforts, and while results seem to be positive, this may not be a viable or appropriate action for most cities.

Mosquito eradication  treatments

For a truly mosquito-free al fresco experience, mosquito treatment sprays are a community favorite. Subdivisions, parks departments, municipalities, and individual homeowners can elect for mosquito treatment sprays to eliminate mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, and spiders. The more residents that elect for treatments, the more effective the preventative shield will be and the more cost-effective individual treatments become.

If you’re interested in reducing the number of mosquitoes and other yard pests, Mosquito One is here to help. We’ve been proudly serving the residents of Southeast Michigan for years, including Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor, Farmington Hills, Pontiac, Warren and more.
